RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 3- A Complete Farce

RuPaul All Stars 3 was always going to struggle to live up to expectations which were set by Allstars 2, however there’s not living up to the expectations which were set and then there’s this.

There will be spoilers for RuPaul’s All Stars 3 in this post.

The title says everything about what I felt about this season, it was a complete farce. The season started off on the wrong foot with what can only be described as a lacklustre roster of queens. Beyond BenDeLaCreme and Shagela (even though it was an ugh, can’t deny she was entertaining) I can’t say that I was overly impressed with the line up. I understand that people like Trixie, Milk and Morgan have had good success outside the show, but from a show perspective it wasn’t exciting to see them back.

Nonetheless sometimes people surprise you and the Drag Race often does a very good job of doing a lot with very little. Ben was outstanding and so was Shangela, by far the two best queens in this season, however nobody else really showed up. I think part of the problem with this season is that Ben and Shagela were absolutely head and shoulders above every other person in the competition and nobody else really rose above being mediocre.

The entire season it was a question of which one of Ben and Shangela were going to win, they were clearly the best two and unless Ru was going to throw the curve ball and give the win to BeBe (who was clearly protected throughout) we would have ended up with a genuine winner who deserved their second (or third) chance at going for the crown. When Ben removed himself from the competition it was a classic Drag Race moment, something totally out the blue and definitely the moment of the season.

With that happening the door was opened for Shangela to walk through and take the crown she deserved, a fitting win for someone who has improved massively since season 3…and then the farce began. In a sense I don’t mind the idea that the eliminated queens get to decide who gets to come back (probably implemented because Ru knows that by not picking Bebe as the winner devalues the early seasons of the show and she was never winning a popularity vote), however it turned into a complete and utter mess.

I think you could have made a good argument for either of Bebe or Trixie being in the final lip sync with Shangela; Bebe had a very good record (although it very much felt that Ru was protecting her throughout and the praise she received at times was unwarranted) and Trixie was the most improved throughout the competition. Regardless of which one you picked there are two things which should have happened, Shangela is one of the final two and Kennedy isn’t.

Yet the ridiculous thing happened, the thing which turned this from a mediocre season of Drag Race into one which was a complete farce, Shangela wasn’t voted into the final two and fucking Kennedy was. Everything after that was a complete waste of time as the competition had instantly lost all credibility, I think what made it even worse is that Kennedy should probably have won the lip sync as well.

Personally I’m not a Trixie fan, I really hate her drag style and her make up is abysmal, she’s bland and considering she’s meant to be a comedy queen she offers very little. I do feel sorry for her because ultimately people are going to look at her as an undeserving winner, and they won’t be wrong.

The downfall of All Stars 3 was that the cast wasn’t strong enough, the challenges didn’t click and the ending was abysmal. The biggest problem was probably that the gap between the excellent All Stars 2 and this season was only a year and a half, so all the good queens which were used in the second season hadn’t yet been replenished and they were replaced with mediocrity for All Stars 3.

So what did you think of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 3? Did you think Trixie was the right winner? Was Shangela robbed? Or are you just wondering why Ross Matthews thinks that swans are ducks? Well leave a comment and share those thoughts.
